No More Music By Hungama! Another Desi Streaming Service Bites The Dust
Once India’s dominating desi music streaming service, Hungama Music unplugged.
The platform that was founded in 2013 announced that it will cease operations from April 15, 2025. The content library will no longer be accessible to users. Once a freemium platform, Hungama Music switched to a subscription model in 2023.
Parent Hungama Digital Media, which was rebranded as Hungama OTT, had struck a strategic partnership with Universal Music Group’s subsidiary Virgin Music Group five months back. However, it was too little too late for Hungama to rival the likes of YouTube Music and Spotify, two international streaming giants that are not doing well either.
In August 2024, Airtel-owned Wynk Music too was assimilated with Apple Music. Besides Wynk, ByteDance’s Resso made an exit in January 2024 from the Indian market. With Resso, Hungama Music, and Wynk Music gone, only JioSaavn and Gaana are left for the desi fans. Meanwhile, Hungama OTT continues to function, streaming audio content, podcasts, web series, and movies.
